The Littleton Chorale
Returning Member New Policies & Procedures
(rev 07.28.10)
On Saturday, April 17, 2010, the Board of the Littleton Chorale made a hallmark decision that will propel the organization forward, towards greater excellence, growth and increased commitment from all singing members. The Board decided to implement an audition process for all returning members (as well as all new members) along with a number of policy statements outlining new expectations for Chorale membership. This is an exciting time for the organization and the beginning of many great things to come. The new policies are outlined below:
Auditions
- All singers currently on the Chorale roster will be required to audition to retain their membership in the Littleton Chorale for the 2010-2011 concert season. [please note: no auditions are required to participate in the Summer Chorus.]
- Upon acceptance to the Chorale, singers will be required to re-audition every three years. The music staff will solicit volunteers to aid in the process of dividing the Chorale into 3 audition "classes" for audition rotation.
- Auditions will take place in August following the conclusion of Western Welcome Week concerts and in January usually the first and second Monday evening. The Chorale Manager will schedule individual auditions of 10 minutes with the artistic staff.
- Auditions are 10 minutes in length and consist of: 1) simple warm-ups and vocalizations; 2) the singing of a familiar melody like "My Country 'Tis Of Thee"; 3) sight singing and rhythmic exercises; 4) pitch memory exercises.
- The conductor can invite singers to sing with the Chorale for a particular concert without audition. (It should be assumed that such an invitation would only be extended to singers from other auditioned ensembles or music professionals.)
Commitment To Concert Season
- All members of the Chorale will be expected to commit to performing the entire concert season (September - May).
- The Board recognizes that family, health and work-related obligations may have to take precedence over one's commitment to the Chorale. Members may request a "Leave of Absence" (without question) for the rare occasion when they cannot fulfill their commitment to the entire season.
- If the singer must be gone for more than one concert, they will be asked to a re-audition.*
Rehearsal Attendance Policy
- Only 2 absences are permitted for each of the season concert rehearsal/preparation cycles.
- There is no difference between an "excused" and an "unexcused" absence.
- An individual with more than 2 absences cannot sing that concert without approval from the conductor and only after that individual participates successfully in an extensive part check with a member of the artistic staff.
- All designated dress rehearsals are mandatory. An absence from a dress rehearsal will prohibit a singer from singing that concert.*
*Final decisions on these matters will be left to the discretion of the conductor in consultation with the chorale manager and board president.
